This time last year I urged you to make your New Year’s resolution a pledge to source more local and sustainable food. I once again urge you to take up this challenge in 2017 and support local farmers and food producers, and encourage you to make your food choices based on sound environmental practices, workers’ rights standards and animal rights practices.
LESS’s ‘Growing our Local Food Economy’ (GOLFE) project can help you with this challenge. Our project aims to support people living in Lancaster District to source more sustainable food locally. We try to do this by raising awareness of where local food can be accessed (through our online local food directory (www.lessuk.org/dircetory); by writing about local food news and events in this weekly column and on our blog (www.lessuk.org/blog), and by creating events that bring local food producers in direct contact with local residents- such as through our seasonal markets and the Faces Behind Your Food exhibition. We have also supported more than 52 local food pledgers to source more than 30% of their food locally.
Anne, one of the 52 pledgers, comments on why she decided to try and source more local food: “I like cooking all sorts of food but had got into a habit of eating the same things week in week out. Having an allotment and visiting Claver hill sporadically I have had lots of fresh veg this summer and surprisingly a little goes a long way. I’ve found it a challenge not regularly reaching for the avocados when shopping as I love them. I have found I visit a supermarket less often in the month and so I’m less tempted to buy exotic items.”
“The food challenge has also encouraged me to think if I really need to buy an item and has got me to question: can I wait until there’s a local option that’s more accessible or can I eat/cook something else?”
“I’m definitely sourcing more food locally now than I was before I took the challenge. I’m visiting more local grocery/fish/meat suppliers. I’m also keen now to ask more restaurants and cafes where their food is sourced as it’s usually not clear.”
Not only will sourcing more local and sustainable food result in you discovering a whole other side to Lancaster, but it will directly support small local food producers and can help you in reducing your food miles and carbon footprint – playing a small but important role in reducing your impact on the climate.
