A month ago LESS co-hosted Lancaster’s Harvest Market with the Lancaster Business Improvement District (Lancaster BID). The event was a great success; so much so, that LESS is now in the process of organising a ‘Midwinter Market’ for the 16th December 2016.
Footfall data from the Harvest Market suggested an increase of 2,943 people compared to the same bank holiday of the previous year (29th August 2015). The sun and free car parking was sure to have helped this, as perhaps did the music, friendly atmosphere and delicious-smelling aromas?
Feedback from stall holders and people attending the harvest market was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees liked the variety of food available; enjoyed eating local food and trying tasters; enjoyed meeting up with friends and getting to know new people; appreciated the market space being used for something different; enjoyed finding out what food was on offer locally, and being given the opportunity to ask questions about the food that they bought.
Stall holders stated that the event was good for raising awareness of their business and their local products; that they enjoyed the music, sunshine and good atmosphere; that the environment and aromas were great and it was good that the market attracted a mix of people. It was also great to have some new faces at the Harvest Market- including Single Step, the Borough Brewery, 1725, Magma Sauces and the Lancaster Labour Food Coop.
In regard to how the market could be made better, it was suggested that it should be made even bigger with more stalls and more food; that there should be more child-friendly activities, more vegetable growers, and more marketing. From the producer’s side, Fridays appear to be the best day to host a market, and we need to make sure that the sun shines for future events!
LESS is now taking on board all of your comments and will do its best to make Lancaster’s Midwinter Market bigger and more special.
If you have any more thoughts regarding the Harvest Market, what you enjoyed, or thoughts on how it could have been improved, please get in contact. Likewise, if you have ideas for what you want the Midwinter Market to include, or if you would like to help organise the Midwinter Market or run a stall, please get in touch! We are also keen to have choirs and acoustic music on the day, so please let us know if you are able to help make this happen.
